Being away from your home for a few days or weeks may cause anxiety since it’s not possible to monitor your home while away, especially if you don’t have an alarm system. Most thieves know how to identify empty houses. Check out some tips for keeping your house safe while you are on vacation.
1. Don’t announce your vacation plans
With Facebook and Twitter, a lot of people write everything about their lives, including entertainment and new jobs, as well as vacations. I know you are so excited and you want to share your great news with other people. However, remember your good news can reach not only your friends but the wrong people as well. Try to share your vacation plans only with your parents and some select friends.
2. Consider timers for lights
This is another best way to keep your house safe while you are on vacation. Set your timers to turn on and off at certain times. This will give the impression that there’s somebody at home.
You can also buy motion detector lighting for the front and backyard of your house. When someone walks around your house, the lights will turn on.
3. Talk to your kids
Explain to your children the importance of not sharing information about your upcoming trip. Your kids may share this information with their classmates or other kids in your neighborhood, and it’s very dangerous. One of these kids may trespass on your property.
4. Hire a lawn care service
If you usually keep your grass tidy and cut, your overgrown lawn will definitely draw attention, so make sure you mow your lawn before you leave. If you are planning on being away for a few weeks, hire a lawn care service or ask your neighbor to cut your grass.
5. Temporarily stop delivery of your newspaper
If you subscribe to the daily newspaper, temporarily stop your service. The number of newspapers can indicate that there is nobody at home and increase your risk for a break-in. And don’t forget to ask the Postal Office to hold your mail as well.
6. Ask your neighbor to keep an eye on your house
If you trust your neighbors, ask them to keep an eye on your home. They can report all unusual activities to the police. If you do not feel comfortable talking with your neighbors, ask your parents, or your best friend to drive by your home several times a week. You can even ask somebody to stay at your home.
7. Don’t post pictures
Be careful about posting your vacation photos to social media. You might be excited and want to share your wonderful pictures, but the more pictures you post while you are on vacation, the higher risk for a break-in. That’s why do not post them until you return.
Vacation is a great time to relax with your whole family and you should not be worried about intruders and break-ins. Use these tips to keep your house safe and enjoy your vacation. By the way, do you have any other tips? Share your thoughts, please!1
