We all know how damaging the sun is for the skin but very few people realize that it is equally damaging for the hair. Without good hair care, you are likely to end up with a frazzled dried-out mane by the end of your holiday. Hair that has been colored is even more at a risk from sun damage. Here are some tips that will help you keep your hair shiny and healthy for the whole summer!
Table of contents:
- Wear a hat
- Use a hair protector
- Don’t use elastic bands
- Fair hair and colored hair are more sensitive
- Rinse your hair
- Avoid heated hair appliances
1. Wear a hat
A hat will protect both your hair and your scalp from the ill effects of the sun. If you cannot find a hat that will suit you, you may want to simply wrap a scarf around your head. This is the best form of protection you can get and it will probably minimize your risk of that nasty headache we tend to get after a day at the beach.
2. Use a hair protector
Find a hair protector that is suitable for your hair type and apply it as often as you would apply sunscreen. Remember to protect your scalp too by applying the protector even at your hair parting.
3. Don’t use elastic bands
Wet hair is very prone to damage and tearing so try to avoid using elastic bands on your hair when it is wet. Instead, invest in a hair clip or a few hairpins!
4. Fair hair and colored hair are more sensitive
These hair types tend to get damaged easier so you need to be more attentive to both the sun and your hair.
5. Rinse your hair
Once you get out of the pool rinse your hair to help remove the chlorine as fast as possible. Chlorine is very damaging to the hair and can even alter the shade of colored hair. When you get home make sure you use a specifically designed shampoo that will help to keep your hair moisturized and protected
6. Avoid heated hair appliances
When your hair is getting more than its fair share of heat during the day it may be wise to avoid using the hairdryer and the hair straightener/rollers etc. Your hair may not be able to handle so much heat stress in a day. Instead, try to scrunch your hair with your fingers and leave it to dry naturally. A drop or two of hair serum will keep the fizz away.
Hopefully, these tips will help you through summer and the hot season preserving your healthy hair with very little effort!
